LEDs, being the abbreviation of Light Emitting Diodes, are small light bulbs that fit into a circuit to emit light. They are different from incandescent lighting in that they do not work from a burning filament but rather through lighting up when a current flows through them. The current passes through a semiconductor material within the light, being the diode, which then, through the process of electroluminescence, emits the photons, creating the light.
LEDs are in high demand today and can be found at your local lighting company, such as Bradcher Industrial Wholesalers. But it is worth noting that the very first LED lights were only seen in 1962. These lights only shone with low-intensity infrared light. The first visible LED lights that appeared after this were ones that too had very low intensity but glowed in the colour red. With strides in its development, they began to be created at low, medium, and high intensities, in a range of infrared, ultraviolet, and visible wavelengths.
Their development changed the landscape of sensor and indicator lights in their initial years, but they were still too low in intensity to light up an entire area. They can now be seen in a variety of applications from controls used in airports, to fairy lights, general lighting, in advertising, automotive headlamps, traffic signals, medical devices, and horticultural grow lights, to name a few.
The fact that LED lighting does not rely on any heat source to emit the light, makes the LED light a more energy-efficient option, as it runs at a cooler temperature. With it being more energy efficient, it is resultantly the cost-effective option as well.
LEDs have become very versatile and are similarly designed and packaged in an easy and versatile style. Initially, LEDs were housed in a small metal case with a glass window to emit the light, but in recent years they have been designed to emit light through transparent moulded plastic. This mould is specifically designed to let the light out and can be found in rectangular or tubular shapes.
